What is a prayer quilt? Well, frankly, it's a term I made up to describe these little art quilts. When my husbands grandmother died at age 92, we cleaned out her basement. In the back of a drawer, in a crumpled up old paper bag I discovered a gold mine. A gold mine of broken, well used rosaries and religious medals. Nana couldn't throw them away so how could we? I took them home and started thinking how to use them. I'm no jewelry maker so remaking them into rosaries or necklaces was out of the question. Then I started wondering if I could incorporate them into little quilts to gift to each member of the family. That's just what I've been doing, slowly, over the years. I have also taken recast medals and sewn them into art quilts as well.
